Flavio Briatore is a popular and very controversial Italian businessman. He began his career as a restaurant manager and insurance salesman. He was later convicted of multiple fraud charges in Italy, where he served two sentences. The convictions were later overturned by an amnesty. Briatore was still successful. He founded various Benetton franchises in the United States and the Virgin Islands. He did this while he was a refugee. In 1990 he was then promoted by Luciano Benetton to head the Benetton Formula 1 team. This was short-lived as Briatore was involved in the race arrangement at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix. Briatore was then banned from all FIA events indefinitely.

When Luciano Benetton laid off the entire management, Briatore became managing director. According to reports, the talented Michael Schumacher was discovered under his leadership. Back then, Michael Schumacher was known for his F1 debut for Jordan. He then decided to transfer and ended up on trial. The case was later dismissed because Jordan and Michael Schumacher never signed a formal contract. Michael Schumacher won his first title in 1994 under the leadership of Briatore. In 2002 the team was renamed Renault F1 again, but later in 2003 Briatore decided to fire Jenson Button and hired Fernando Alonso. Briatore and Alonso met in 1999 through the world of racing. In 2005 and 2006, Alonso won two F1 titles, ending Michael Schumacher’s reign.
