Part of the computer construction of the Internet is the delegation of market authority to nodes or super-nodes, with the system undergoing a slight shift in centralization. It removes environmental constraints such as physical or virtual network configuration requirements, as well as firewalls, network topology and port management – developers don’t even have to worry about database configuration and maintenance.

The internet computer is an innovation of blockchain technology that essentially allows for web speed and unlimited power. At the time of writing, this statement is purely conceptual.
Internet Computer (ICP), founded in October 2017 by Dominic Williams, has also quickly risen to the top of the market cap. It currently has a market value of about $14 billion, making it the 10th largest crypto currency by market value.
Williams is the inventor of Threshold Relay and probabilistic lock consensus, and is an active member of the Bitcoin and Ethereum technology communities. Before ICPO, he was CTO of String Labs and founder and CEO of Fight My Monster, a massively multiplayer online game and fun social network for kids.
ICP is designed to scale smart contracts and data calculations, execute them at web speed, and process and store data securely and efficiently.
It has also created software frameworks to make it easier for developers. Internet Computer aims to revolutionize the token-based Internet services that underlie decentralized financial systems and perhaps even traditional business systems and websites.
However, it is not easy to become a global computing platform by extending the public internet to the blockchain. The Internet computer makes use of various technologies in its attempt:
- Chain wrench technology: Blockchain technology uses various cryptographic protocols to organize the nodes that make up an internet computer. It has a single public key. With CKT, any device, such as a smartphone or smartwatch, can verify artifacts from the internet
- Non-interactive distributed key generation (NIDKG): This non-interactive and publicly verifiable secret sharing procedure consists of an operator constructing a Shamir secret by sharing field elements. These traders then distribute the shares to various recipients in a confidential and verifiable manner. The Shamir secret exchange was formulated by Adi Shamir and is one of the first secret exchange methods in cryptography, based on polynomial interpolation over finite fields.
- Network Nervous System (NNS): An open token control system is responsible for managing the Internet computer. It stores information about which nodes belong to which subnet and manages updates to this information.
- Internet ID: The online identity that an Internet user assumes in online communities and websites.
Chain Key technology is the engine of the Internet computer. This allows new nodes to be added and new sub-networks to be formed, theoretically extending the network indefinitely. Defective or destroyed parts can be replaced without affecting the system.
Blockchain technology enables an internet computer to operate at internet speed, where calls are made in milliseconds and updates to calls take one to two seconds.
Genesis has an Internet transmission rate of 2.5 blocks per second (bps) and is expected to gradually reach 10.3 bps, with a target of 1,000 bps by the end of 2021.
Each of the old signers must send a message to the new signers via a non-interactive key redistribution protocol. This is done safely thanks to encrypted transmission secrecy and non-interactive proof of zero knowledge. Since the re-exchange protocol is non-interactive, it adapts well to an asynchronous environment.
The Internet Computer Token, ICP, is responsible for:
- Promotion of network management: ICP tokens are blocked to create neurons that participate in the control of the network by voting. Users are rewarded economically.
- Computer cycle production The ICP token acts as a storage source of value that can be converted into cycles. Cycles fuel the calculations. The fuel is burned when it is used. NNS converts KPIs into variable rate loops that are continuously configured by NNS in response to external markets.
- Participation allowance: The network uses new IBOs to reward and incentivize network members. Users can perform various roles to earn PKI rewards, including managing, tuning, and administering the host machines that host the network.
In May 2018, DFINITY announced plans to distribute DFINITY tokens worth 35 million Swiss francs per airdrop to promote Cloud 3.0 to community members and help them become early adopters.
DFINITY launched alpha majnet on the 18th. December 2018.
Internet Computer is currently supported by 48 independent data centers in North America, Europe and Asia, with a total of 1,300 nodes. The network is expected to grow exponentially to support the next generation of large dapps.
The maximum number of ICP tokens in Genesis is 469,213,710 and the tradable supply depends on the market dynamics. At the time of Genesis, approximately 23.86% of the tokens were held by the DFINITY fund, 18% were held by members of the Internet Computer team, 24.72% were held by early stage donors, 9.5% were held by early stage donors, and the remainder were distributed to other levels of investors and strategic partners.

After raising $61 million from Andreesen Horowitz and Polychain Capital in February 2018, DFINITY has been thrust into the spotlight as one of the most notable projects to emerge in a crypto-currency bear market.
DFINITY Foundation raised another $102 million in August 2018 from SV Angel, Andreesen Horowitz, Village Global, Aspect Ventures, Amino Capital and others, bringing its total funding to $166.9 million.
At the time, DFINITY wanted to create an Internet-based computer to lower the cost of running cloud-based business applications, in direct competition with Amazon Web Services. The public launch of the PKI took place on the 10th. May 2021.
